Two spring to mind: “Never look back”—this from the least self-analytical woman ever—and “I know what I want to get done,” something that allowed her to cut through the mass of choices life gave her, for good and for bad. Bunny’s “Three Musketeers” were far more dashing than those that Dumas wrote about. Can you talk about the relationship she had with Cristóbal Balenciaga, Hubert de Givenchy, and Jean Schlumberger? Her relationship with Balenciaga was reverential; with Schlumberger, romantic; with Givenchy, she wavered between wanting more of the man’s heart, soul, and body and taking him as what he truly was: her best friend. Because of her extreme modesty, a lot of people don’t know about Bunny’s contributions to interior and horticultural design. What do you want people to take away from this book?

Bunny was hampered by being born in 1910, when women of her class, for the most part, did not appear in public or as professionals. Her husband Paul’s intense need for privacy—and her own—held back both public recognition and the opportunity for other jobs. What she said at the end of her life, when a neighbor asked her what to do about her gardens and landscape, was to “keep it simple,” and that was what she did for herself. She had a good eye that seized on elemental landscape forms and emphasized them, and indoors she let the incredible art on the walls do the talking. What do you think Bunny would have made of today’s age of social media, and people being famous for being (in)famous? More than I suspected when I began, I saw that Bunny longed to be recognized for her gifts and accomplishments—but on her own terms, and within her own life’s framework. In his eulogy for Bunny, Frank Langella noted the “self-promoting interviews she never gave…the galas never attended…” and “the red carpets she never stepped on.” Conversely, being a woman who embraced the new, such as the fax machine, I am sure she would have found a way to turn social media to her advantage.Early in the book, you tell an amazing story about Bunny snapping up several Rothkos. Later, an Agnes Martin is referenced in a tender scene. What was her relationship to contemporary art? Bunny loved the contemporary work she collected—Rothkos, Diebenkorns, Braques—the works of each of those three artists resonated with her. I feel that she bonded with the heights and depths of Rothko’s luminous, unbounded, and tragic world. Without ever touching on Diebenkorn’s work specifically, I realized that many of his works were, in a sense, landscapes for her, and their horizons were what she thought were their most important features, just as she knew that in landscape design, she had to begin with the horizon. So she bought eight Diebenkorns. Her response to Braque, in my view, was to his heroism and high drama, especially in the Les Oiseaux series. At a different level, she responded to the idea of a bird as a frail creature that could evade capture but was willing to return to a cage—in her case, the life of wealth and power she shared with her second husband, Paul Mellon.

The other was content in mud boots, with her trusted pair of loppers under her arm and her curls (coiffed at home for hundreds of dollars) cascading from her Balenciaga bucket hat as she snipped flowers and ordered trees to be moved and hills to be re-graded. Whichever Bunny she was, she approached the task at hand—whether party or planting—with elegance and certainty. Recently, Vogue spoke to Mac Griswold, author of I’ll Build a Stairway to Paradise: A Life of Bunny Mellon, about Mrs. Mellon’s legacy, her views on fame, her relationship to art and design, and much more. Read the full interview below. Mac Griswold: Bunny was just another parent when Eliza Lloyd [Mellon’s daughter] and I went to Foxcroft as freshmen in 1956. Only after Christmas, when she took the two of us to a Broadway musical that spoofed Broadway musicals, did I first glimpse Bunny’s understated wit and her playful world. She knew Gershwin, the Astaires—she knew them all, it turned out—and she said nothing about that at the show. If you had to pick just one to capture her approach to life and design, what would it be and why?
